Boris Gutnikov (born 1931-1986) represents the famous St Petersburg violin school and is well known both in Russia and abroad. As a young performer he has won first prizes at such prestigious events as Slavik and Ondficek competition (Prague, 1956), Long and Thibaud competition (Paris, 1957) and Tchaikovsky competition (Moscow, 1962).
The artist has performed extensively in Russia and dozens of foreign countries. His performing style has evolved from impulsive self expression to the wisdom of polished harmonic simplicity. However he has completely retained his ability to excite the audience even when performing the most
'cerebral' music.
Gutnikov's violin has an enchantingly beautiful tone and for this reason he often avoids excessively sophisticated phrasing. The 'voice' of his violin is
faultless and is equally expressive in virtuoso pieces and in the cantilena. His performance is distinguished by delicate nuances of sound and a great variety of colour.
In his interpretation of Bach and Mozart concertos on this CD Boris Gutnikov revives the best traditions of high classicism - emphasizes the well thought out performing concept, naturalness and clarity of phrasing, a balance of the expressive and the logical.

ReplyDeleteAhh! A rare opportunity to hear more of our violinist who played the Britten Violin Concerto in one of your prior posts. I liked him a lot and here we have him doing chamber music. His Britten was very special. I was hoping you would post some more by him. Also see there is a 2nd recital by Komarov!! Another Russian I had never come across. And what a pianist! Thanks so much for these important additions to our hungry souls and ears!
ReplyDeleteGutnikov is a marvelous representation of the great Russian school of violin playing. Unfortunately he was not well-known in the west, so your introduction of him on your blog is greatly appreciated!
ReplyDeleteHis performance of the Tchaikovsky Valse is particularly extraordinary!
Thank you!
Dear La Danse de Puck, Duddy Kravitz,
