Prokofiev worked on his Second Violin Concerto at the same time as Romeo and Juliet and the two works have much in common, particularly an ardent and voluptuous lyricism.

The second of Shostakovich's wartime symphonies, the Eighth was criticized as being too pessimistic at a time when Stalin was insisting that Soviet victory was in sight. It does contain possibly the most terrifying music Shostakovich ever wrote, yet he tried to persuade listeners otherwise, describing it as "an optimistic, life-asserting work... all that is dark and evil will rot away, and beauty will triumph." Perhaps the final flute solo does at least suggest that the lone hero has survived.

After tonight's concert there's a chance to hear the fruits of the latest round of Adopt-a-Composer projects, which pair a composer with an amateur performing group in order to write and perform a new piece of music.

In addition to Beethoven’s triumphant Fifth Symphony, Riccardo Muti leads two rarely heard works by Prokofiev and Shostakovich. The Meeting of the Volga and the Don was composed in 1951 by Prokofiev to commemorate the completion of a canal between two of the Soviet Union’s major waterways, while Shostakovich’s deeply felt song cycle Suite on Verses of Michelangelo Buonarroti sets eleven poems by Michelangelo covering such themes as love, death, creativity, and separation.

Rudolf Barschai (1924 - 2010) wurde als Gründer des Moskauer Kammerorchesters (1956) weltberühmt und gehörte eigentlich zu den Stützen des Sowjetischen Kulturbetriebs. Trotzdem wanderte er 1977 nach Israel aus. In dieser Zeit hat er häufiger das RSO Stuttgart dirigiert. Fast wäre er hier Chefdirigent, als Nachfolger von Sergiu Celibidache, geworden. Bei Durchsicht des spannenden Archivbestands finden sich neben Klassikern einige aufregende Repertoireneulinge, wie der russische Komponist Alexander Lokschin (1920 - 1987), als dessen Herold der Dirigent gelten kann. Interessant in Bezug auf die Musizierpraxis des russischen Musikers sind auch seine Bearbeitungen. Beispiel dafür ist in unserer Sendung Barschais Fassung der "Visions fugitives" von Prokofjew.
