Yannick Nézet-Séguin, in his first year as music director, brings the Philadelphia Orchestra to Carnegie Hall for a dramatic program featuring Ravel’s La Valse and Shostakovich's burning Symphony No. 5.

Leonidas Kavakos, known as a "musician's musician" in classical music circles, is the soloist in Szymanowski's Violin Concerto No. 2. Kavakos has been a regular guest in Philadelphia since making his debut with the orchestra in 1999. He takes on a work characterized by its Polish folk influences and lush Romantic strains.

Concert informatie

Het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest verdiept onder leiding van Mariss Jansons zich in heel uiteenlopende stemmingen. Richard Strauss en Johannes Brahms staan op de lessenaar tijdens dit concert in de Robeco SummerNights. In Strauss' Tod und Verklärung ziet een stervende zijn leven voorbij trekken. Het flitsende Till Eulenspiegel is juist ‘lustig’. Een stoute jongen houdt zijn dorp voor de gek.

Leonidas Kavakos in Brahms' Vioolconcert
De Griekse violist Leonidas Kavakos is solist in het Vioolconcert van Johannes Brahms. Een stuk ‘tégen de viool’, schamperden niet-begrijpende tijdgenoten van Brahms. Inderdaad, het Vioolconcert is een uitdaging voor solist en orkest. De beloning is echter groot. Van mysterieus en donker ontwikkelt het zich naar energiek en onstuimig. Onlangs nam Leonidas Kavakos het op. ‘Lang geleden dat er zo’n perfecte versie verscheen’, schreef The Guardian.
