Yefim Bronfman says he never wants the audience to think that Brahms’s Second Piano Concerto sounds difficult…although it is very challenging for the solo pianist. He performs the work with Maestro Muti, who also leads a symphony by Tchaikovsky and a Beethoven overture. Each of the works on this concert connects with the great Russian city of St. Petersburg: one was premiered there, in 1892 (The Nutcracker), the plot of one is partially set in one of its civic fairs (Petrushka), and the other depicts a horrifying massacre in 1905 of civilians in the city’s palace square (Shostakovich’s Symphony Eleventh Symphony). German conductor Ingo Metzmacher conducts the concert, and you can find interviews with him and CSO violists John Bartholemew and Daniel Orbach below. Orbach’s grandfather was wounded in the scene depicted by Shostakovich before he escaped to the US, and Orbach tells that story in his interview. Bartholemew tells us more about the viola section’s unique part in this symphony, and CSO English horn discusses his role in the work.

Listen to the archived broadcast, recorded Friday, January 30 at 8 pm, with Riccardo Muti leading the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in a night out at sea as they perform pieces by Mendelssohn, Debussy and Scriabin.

Muti begins the program with Mendelssohn’s Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage Overture, a piece inspired by Goethe’s poems Calm at Sea and The Prosperous Voyage, depicting a more personal rather than literal journey through “deathly” still waters.

The CSO continues the evening with Debussy’s La Mer, a symphonic portrait worked solely from the composer’s memory of summers spent in Cannes. Muti ends the program with Scriabin’s The Divine Poem a four-part tone poem without pause. With the sections translating to “Struggles,” “Delights,” and “Divine Play,” the bridge between a literal and metaphorical journey through ever-changing waters comes to a close.

This concert marks the first of three concerts by the CSO at Carnegie Hall this month. Muti has been music director of the CSO since 2010.

Award-winning British pianist and stalwart of the concert platform Peter Donohoe performs music by three of the early 20th Century's greatest figures. He begins with one of Alexander Scriabin's latest masterpieces - his chromatic, and almost atonal Piano Sonata No.7 "White Mass" - composed as a sort of exorcism for the darkness of his previous sonata. Ravel's "Miroirs" was composed around 1905 and dedicated to his five fellow members of the Parisian group of "artistic outcasts" - Les Apaches.
He ends the concert with Rachmaninov's set of 13 Preludes, composed in 1910.

Sir Roger Norrington conducts the RSNO in a concert on the brink of romanticism featuring pianist Lars Vogt performing Mozart's brooding D minor concerto, one of only two written in a minor key. The composer famously used D minor for some of his darker works including the Requiem and Don Giovanni. Haydn's dramatic La Passione symphony is also something of a pre-echo of romanticism and makes a perfect foil to Beethoven's 6th symphony, known as the Pastoral whose literal depiction of a Summer storm paves the way forward into the romantic era.

Lorin Maazel assembled The Ring Without Words, his 70-minute distillation of Wagner's four-opera, 17-hour cycle at the request of Telarc Records in 1987. The piece features no voices, only Wagner's rich orchestral tapestry. It has taken on a life of its own, and the conductor brings it to New York as part of the Vienna Philharmonic's three-night stand at Carnegie Hall.

The program also features a pinnacle of Viennese classicism, Mozart’s Symphony No. 40.
