   Viktor Liberman, 68, a Russian-born violinist who gained fame in the former Soviet Union before moving to the Netherlands, has died of liver cancer in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
   Born in Leningrad in 1931, Liberman began playing the violin at age 6. Before he was 20, he had joined the sity's Philharmonic Orchestra, remaining there for 29 years until he emigrated to the Netherlands in 1979.
   On arriving in the West, he joined the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra as concert master with the prestigious Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He led the orchestra until his partial retirement in 1997.
   After his last concert, he was named a Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion, one of the most prestigious Dutch honors.
   In a 1996 interview with the Amsterdam daily Ilet Parool, Liberman said he never felt any affinity with the Communist Party in Soviet Union but did not consider himself a dissident.
"The violin was my life," he said.

Viktor S. Lieberman (January 10, 1931, Leningrad - July 17, 1999) - Russian-Dutch violinist.
He studied in Leningrad, including a Benjamin Sher. In 1958 the first International Competition Tchaikovsky was awarded the fifth prize. For many years, was concertmaster of the first violins in the symphony orchestra of the Leningrad Philharmonic, Yevgeny Mravinsky headed. According to the memoirs of a violinist J. Milkis, "an impressive example for young pianists could be that exceptional rigor with which he was concerned about the unity of the strokes, the identity of manners of sound and vibrato, phrasing, ensemble precision, etc." [1] He played with it team and as a soloist: the reminiscences of the widow of Mravinsky AM Vavilina-Mravinsky, an outstanding conductor believed that the performance of the Passacaglia Lieberman, the First Violin Concerto of Dmitri Shostakovich is the best ever played [2]. Leonid Gakkel recalls, "during the performance of Berg's Violin Concerto in the Great Hall of the Philharmonic lights went out: Lieberman for 15 - 20 minutes playing with inspiration from the stage solo violin music by Bach, until the light came on again" [3]. Among the recordings made by Lieberman in the USSR - Sonata № 6 for violin and piano by Ludwig van Beethoven (with Felicia Fondaminsky) and the Sinfonia Concertante for violin, viola and orchestra by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (with violist Yuri Kramarovym and Leningrad Chamber Orchestra conducted by Edward Serov) .
In 1979 he emigrated to the Netherlands. Was concertmaster of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam associate professor and professor at the Utrecht Conservatory. At the final stage of his career in 1997-1999. head of the North Netherlands Orchestra.
