Riccardo Muti and Yefim Bronfman
CSO Radio

Yefim Bronfman says he never wants the audience to think that Brahms’s Second Piano Concerto sounds difficult…although it is very challenging for the solo pianist. He performs the work with Maestro Muti, who also leads a symphony by Tchaikovsky and a Beethoven overture. Extended interviews with Bronfman about working with Maestro Muti, how composers such as Brahms dealt with the shadow of Beethoven, and the technical demands made on pianists in works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Ravel may be found below.

Riccardo Muti (30.01.2015 - Live - Carnegie Hall) MP3

Carnegie Hall Live
Chicago Symphony Orchestra Plays Mendelssohn, Debussy and Scriabin

Ricardo Muti conducts the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Ricardo Muti conducts the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (Todd Rosenberg/CSO)

Listen to the archived broadcast, recorded Friday, January 30 at 8 pm, with Riccardo Muti leading the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in a night out at sea as they perform pieces by Mendelssohn, Debussy and Scriabin.

Muti begins the program with Mendelssohn’s Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage Overture, a piece inspired by Goethe’s poems Calm at Sea and The Prosperous Voyage, depicting a more personal rather than literal journey through “deathly” still waters.

The CSO continues the evening with Debussy’s La Mer, a symphonic portrait worked solely from the composer’s memory of summers spent in Cannes. Muti ends the program with Scriabin’s The Divine Poem a four-part tone poem without pause. With the sections translating to “Struggles,” “Delights,” and “Divine Play,” the bridge between a literal and metaphorical journey through ever-changing waters comes to a close.

This concert marks the first of three concerts by the CSO at Carnegie Hall this month. Muti has been music director of the CSO since 2010.

WQXR's Jeff Spurgeon co-hosts the broadcast with fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi.

Tchaikovsky’s thrilling Fourth Symphony is featured in this program, with Berlioz’s early Waverley Overture and Debussy’s evocative La mer preceding it. From previous seasons, we have also included works by Martucci and Ravel. CSO musicians Jennifer Gunn (piccolo) and Baird Dodge (principal second violin) talk about their roles in audio interviews, with Gunn mentioning the extreme preparation needed for her brief (nineteen notes!) solo, and Dodge comparing Tchaikovsky to Shakespeare.

December 2, 2013 Authored by CSO Radio
CSO Radio, Verdi’s 200th

From the opening week of the 2013/14 concert season comes this program of a Brahms masterpiece, a virtually unknown work by Johann Strauss Jr., and instrumental music by Giuseppe Verdi. The ballet music from Macbeth springs forth with energy and swagger, while the symphony unfurls with inspired grace. From 2012 comes a similarly enthusiastic performance of Franck’s grand Symphony in D Minor, all conducted by music director Riccardo Muti.

In addition to Beethoven’s triumphant Fifth Symphony, Riccardo Muti leads two rarely heard works by Prokofiev and Shostakovich. The Meeting of the Volga and the Don was composed in 1951 by Prokofiev to commemorate the completion of a canal between two of the Soviet Union’s major waterways, while Shostakovich’s deeply felt song cycle Suite on Verses of Michelangelo Buonarroti sets eleven poems by Michelangelo covering such themes as love, death, creativity, and separation.

Riccardo Muti conducts Schubert (with Yo-Yo Ma and Giovanni Sollima)

Schubert’s Third Symphony has a memorable melody for clarinet after its brief introduction, and the Fourth Symphony, subtitled Tragic, moves with irresistible momentum. A new concerto by Italian composer Giovanni Sollima for two cellos will be heard between the two symphonies. With the composer playing one of the solo parts, the concerto’s other part is played by Yo-Yo Ma. Sollima uses many different styles in the piece, including southern Italian folk music in a work the audience enjoyed immensely. We have an extended interview with Sollima and Ma discussing the work below. Other music to complete the program includes a portion of Schubert’s incidental music to Rosamunde and the Ballet Music from Verdi’s Macbeth. Music director Riccardo Muti conducts the program.
