Ingo Metzmacher dirigiert das Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berl
Each of the works on this concert connects with the great Russian city of St. Petersburg: one was premiered there, in 1892 (The Nutcracker), the plot of one is partially set in one of its civic fairs (Petrushka), and the other depicts a horrifying massacre in 1905 of civilians in the city’s palace square (Shostakovich’s Symphony Eleventh Symphony). German conductor Ingo Metzmacher conducts the concert, and you can find interviews with him and CSO violists John Bartholemew and Daniel Orbach below. Orbach’s grandfather was wounded in the scene depicted by Shostakovich before he escaped to the US, and Orbach tells that story in his interview. Bartholemew tells us more about the viola section’s unique part in this symphony, and CSO English horn discusses his role in the work.
