ReplyDeleteA wonderful, rare recording! I do not believe that Rozhdestvensky ever recorded Liszt's Faust symphony commercially. This is quite an energetic and dramatic performance. Thanks very much!
ReplyDeleteMay I also offer you a recording of Rozdestvensky conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Dvorak Four Slavonic Dances live at Symphony Hall in Boston 13 Feb 2004. Broadcast recording.

Enjoy!
Dear Duddy Kravitz,
DeleteI am very glad to see you.
Thank you very much.
Any chance the Dvorak Four Slavonic Dances by Rozhdestvensky and the BSO could be re-uploaded?
DeleteEste blog es maravilloso. ¡Gracias!!!!! ;=)
ReplyDeleteIndeed a very interesting performance, even if the recording level does fluctuate somewhat - as if the engineers were never quite sure how loud it was going to get.
ReplyDeleteBTW, probably worth mentioning that this is, which makes it even rarer, the first version of Faust, which is purely orchestral and has a different final coda from the revision, which sets the Chorus Mysticus from Part II of Goethe's Faust, for tenor and male chorus. (Interestingly, or perhaps inevitably, Mahler's setting of the same text at the end of his 8th symphony has distinct rhythmic similarities in his settings of certain phrases - notably "Das ewig Weibliche")
The very first recording, made in Paris in 1934 under Selmer Meyrowitz (http://www.pristineclassical.com/LargeWorks/Orchestral/PASC032.php or http://quartier-des-archives.blogspot.ca/2011/07/liszt-faust-symphonie-selmar-meyrowitz.html) has the final chorus in French - so "Das ewig Weibliche" becomes "La femme eternelle", highly disconcerting if you know the music well.
Thanks for this, it is rather special.
Dear dgrb,
