Roger Norrington (27.02.2015 - Live - Edinburgh) FLAC

Royal Scottish National Orchestra - Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven
Radio 3 Live in Concert
Listen in pop-out player

Sir Roger Norrington conducts the RSNO in a concert on the brink of romanticism featuring pianist Lars Vogt performing Mozart's brooding D minor concerto, one of only two written in a minor key. The composer famously used D minor for some of his darker works including the Requiem and Don Giovanni. Haydn's dramatic La Passione symphony is also something of a pre-echo of romanticism and makes a perfect foil to Beethoven's 6th symphony, known as the Pastoral whose literal depiction of a Summer storm paves the way forward into the romantic era.

Haydn - Symphony No 49 'La Passione'
Mozart - Piano Concerto No 20 K.466

Beethoven - Symphony No 6 'Pastoral'

Vienna Philharmonic Performs the Ring Without Words

Lorin Maazel assembled The Ring Without Words, his 70-minute distillation of Wagner's four-opera, 17-hour cycle at the request of Telarc Records in 1987. The piece features no voices, only Wagner's rich orchestral tapestry. It has taken on a life of its own, and the conductor brings it to New York as part of the Vienna Philharmonic's three-night stand at Carnegie Hall.

The program also features a pinnacle of Viennese classicism, Mozart’s Symphony No. 40.
