Anna Vinnitskaya (piano)

A century ago this week, Russia was convulsed by the first of two revolutions in a single year. (It's called the February Revolution because Russia still used an old calendar at that time.) To mark the anniversary, this Russian Revolutionaries series from LSO St Luke's in London features four pianists from Russia, Georgia and the Ukraine delving into the riches of Russian piano music composed before, after and even during the momentous year of 1917 - by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Medtner, Prokofiev and Shostakovich. In today's concert Russian pianist Anna Vinnitskaya includes Shostakovich's rarely heard set of pieces for children, Dances of the Dolls.

James Galway, Daniel Dodds (14.08.2017-Live-Lucerne) FLAC

14. AUG 2017
KKL Luzern, Concert Hall

Festival Strings Lucerne
Daniel Dodds  violin and musical direction
Sir James Galway  flute
Sir James Galway’s 40th Anniversary in Lucerne

Wolfgang Amadé Mozart (1756–1791)
Symphony No.29 in A major, K. 201 (186a)
Flute Concerto in D major, K. 314 (285d)
encore - Johann Sebastian Bach: Badinerie, from Orchestral Suite No 2 in B minor, BWV 1067
encore - Traditional Irish: Belfast Hornpipe
Jean Sibelius (1865–1957)
Suite from Pelléas and Mélisande, Op. 46
encore - Sibelius: Valse triste

Reunite with a legend: to mark the 40th anniversary of his Festival stage
debut, Sir James Galway, ”the man with the golden flute,” will play Mozart’s
D major Concerto, K. 314. The fact that its composer actually disdained the flute is impossible to tell from a single bar of this score. And if Mozart had known Galway, you can be sure he would have written more than two concertos for the instrument. Sir James enchants with his exquisite sound, immaculate technique, musical thoughtfulness, and spirited demeanor. To start the program, the Festival Strings will play another Mozart piece, the dazzling Symphony in A major, K. 201, which sets off veritable fireworks with its “Mannheim rocket” theme in the finale: audiences of the time found it so thrilling that they broke into applause. The second half will present a psychological drama from 1905: Jean Sibelius’s incidental music to Maurice Maeterlinck’s Pelléas et Mélisande – a Finnish alternative to the adaptations by Fauré, Debussy, and Schoenberg.

Juanjo Mena (conductor)

Juanjo Mena and the BBC Philharmonic present Shostakovich's Fifteenth and final symphony in the second half of the concert, a work which moves from playful abandon to existential dread. Before the interval outstanding French soloist Renaud Capuçon joins the orchestra for Shostakovich's First Violin Concerto, a work he hid from view until after the death of Stalin. The concert opens with a UK premiere: an evocative portrait of Shostakovich by compatriot Rodion Shchedrin, 'Dialogues with Shostakovich'.
