Mahler: Symphony no.7

London Symphony Orchestra
conductor Danielle Gatti

After a gap of almost two decades Daniele Gatti returns to the LSO with a programme consisting of a single work, Mahler's awe?inspiring Seventh Symphony. It is more enigmatic than some of his other symphonies; Mahler is at a musical turning point at the start of the 20th century.

Riccardo Muti, CSO (30-31.01 & 01.02.2014 - Live - Chicago) FLAC

Riccardo Muti conducts Schubert (with Yo-Yo Ma and Giovanni Sollima)

Schubert’s Third Symphony has a memorable melody for clarinet after its brief introduction, and the Fourth Symphony, subtitled Tragic, moves with irresistible momentum. A new concerto by Italian composer Giovanni Sollima for two cellos will be heard between the two symphonies. With the composer playing one of the solo parts, the concerto’s other part is played by Yo-Yo Ma. Sollima uses many different styles in the piece, including southern Italian folk music in a work the audience enjoyed immensely. We have an extended interview with Sollima and Ma discussing the work below. Other music to complete the program includes a portion of Schubert’s incidental music to Rosamunde and the Ballet Music from Verdi’s Macbeth. Music director Riccardo Muti conducts the program.
