Prom 18: Mahler - Symphony No 3
BBC Proms, 2016
Live at BBC Proms: in the 50th-anniversary year of his first appearance at the Proms, Bernard Haitink conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in Mahler's longest symphony, the Third, with mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly.
Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London, 29.07.2016

Bernard Haitink (conductor)
On the shores of the Attersee in Upper Austria, the hut still stands in which Gustav Mahler set about creating one of the most overwhelming visions of nature in all art. The composer's Third Symphony harnessed the expanse that surrounded him. Horns bray and trombones growl in the face of nature's primeval power; human voices move from grief to hope before, as Mahler declared, 'nature in its totality rings and resounds'.
In the 50th-anniversary year of his first appearance at the Proms, Bernard Haitink conducts Mahler's mighty nature symphony.

Simon Rattle - Mahler - Symphony No.2 (14.02.2015 - Live - London) FLAC
Berlin Philharmonic - Lachenmann, Mahler
Radio 3 Live in Concert
Royal Festival Hall, London, Live, 14.02.2015
Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic close their London residency at the Royal Festival Hall with a work significant to both of them. Mahler's epic Second Symphony, beginning with its dramatic, brooding funeral march and ending in an overwhelming affirmation of Christian faith, was premiered in 1895 by the Berlin Philharmonic; and it was the 'Resurrection' Symphony that inspired the eleven-year-old Rattle to be a conductor. Fifty years later it's become something of a Rattle party-piece, a fitting climax to his sixtieth birthday celebrations in London.
Providing an upbeat to Mahler's transcendent symphony is Helmut Lachenmann's late 80s 'Tableau', a short, intense work which uses a huge conventional orchestra to unconventional ends. It's a perfect foil to the Mahler, a typical Rattle juxtaposition designed to make an audience sit up and think.

Michael Tilson Thomas conducts Mahler 9
From concerts the week of the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, we share a memorial to the president by Stravinsky with a text by W.H. Auden, from a performance which closed with a moving and intense performance of Mahler’s final completed symphony. The program includes another rarity, this time by Mahler and intended for his First Symphony: the movement titled Blumine (Bouquet of Flowers) featuring principal trumpeter Chris Martin. Michael Tilson Thomas conducts each work. The trumpeter is again brought to the fore with his brass section-mates in two works from their 2011 recording on CSO Resound, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Brass Live.
